Afghanistan: Learn from History

The past is a great educator. We learn as children not to touch fire or you will be burned. How hard is it to learn that lesson concerning Afghanistan?
The former Soviet Union fought in Afghanistan for 10 years (1979 – 1989) resulting in a retreat that made Dunkirk (World War II) look like a social [...]

Practicing Medicine in the Hometown

Many of us growing up had dreams of becoming a doctor, police officer, fireman, or major league baseball player.  My personal dream was to become a lawyer.  I never became a lawyer because I didn’t have the personal drive at the time.  I was busy doing everything but studying and my dreams of passing the bar [...]

You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out

I watched that timeless movie classic “A Christmas Story” the other night and was reminded about this incident I’m writing about today.
About 9 years ago, we went to the front door of our home after hearing frantic knocking. Jake, our 8 year old son, was outside playing with Clay, the 12 year old from across the street.  Clay was [...]

Social Security is Going Broke!

I am soon to be one of the Americans under 50 with apparently little to no monthly Social Security benefit appearing in my bank account. The recent news that Social Security is going broke or insolvent is not welcome news.  And, if Andrea Coombes with the Wall Street Journal and other pundits are correct, more [...]

Iran with Nuclear Weapons

I shake my head in frustration as the United States and the international community take another “last stand” concerning Iran and their obtaining nuclear weapons. One must go back to the beginning of the Iranian Revolution to understand what’s really happening today. My first memory of diplomatic problems with Iran occurred in 1979 when Iranians [...]

Signs That Your Child May Have an Eating Disorder

With each and every year that passes it seems to get harder and harder for parents to protect their children from the evils of the world. It’s hard enough to help keep them young and innocent and away from things such as sex, alcohol, and drugs but even if you are successful in doing that [...]

New Party in Congress: Republicrats!

Washington, DC:
A new political party has emerged from the familiar Washington landscape that has been ruled by Republicans and Democrats for over 30 years.  Effective today the Republicrats will be operating in the halls of Congress.
Republicrats, if you haven’t heard are a mixture of both parties but only the best ideals of both parties.  We believe [...]

Parenting Through Divorce

What ever your grounds for getting a divorce is, you shouldn’t put your youngsters in the center of it. Divorce may happen to be the end of your marriage, simply it isn’t the end of your task as a parent. Divorce parenting can be a tough situation if not done properly. If you and your [...]

Gentlemen Are Cool!

I was brought up to be a gentleman whether I am or not today. I was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and made a gentleman by an act of the US Congress. I realize my thinking may be dated, but common courtesies, etiquette, and manners never [...]

Tiddlywinks?

After taking an informal poll this morning we determined that no one under the age of 40 knows what tiddlywinks are.   We asked 8 people (5 below age 40 and 3 above age 40) if they knew what tiddlywinks were.

“Its a drug you take”
“I think its a card game”

As predicted, only the over 40 crowd knew [...]
